"Degradation of oil in water by ultrasonic irradiation” - A new student project just started at TUV NEL

Date: 29 May 2009

A new student project has been initiated at TUV NEL to carry out a literature review on the subject of degradation of oil in water by ultrasonic irradiation. It has been reported that hydroxyl radical (OH-) can be generated by using ultrasound and that studies have already shown that ultrasound can irradiate polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and ibuprofen. With legislation moving toward a risk based approach for the management of produced water in the North Sea, there will have an increasing demand for technology that can treat dissolved oil in produced water. If ultrasound can be effective in generating hydroxyl radical (OH-) and oxidising organic compounds in the produced water, it could potentially offer a new and effective solution to treat produced water to meet incoming new legislation. This project aims at carrying out a comprehensive literature review to establish the mechanism involved in ultrasound induced oxidation process and to find out what has been done to date in using ultrasound for irradiation of organic materials in water.
